What A Yogi Eats...

...the brown bag lunch for the yogi on the go.

 Kapha increasing lunch ingredients

I'm on a big Vata decreasing Kapha increasing kick these days as well as trying to eat a little more tri-doshic in general to help balance my metabolism and what I have discovered is that oatmeal is the perfect food! Yep oatmeal, it is the perfect neutral base for however you want to make it. For me this means working with my 2 doshas, Pitta and Vata. So, I'm bi-doshic don't judge me! For the past few weeks my dual dosha quelling has been oatmeal in some fashion, here are some of my favorites:

Start with about 1/4-1/2 old fashion rolled oats. You can use instant or steal cut but for eating at work the old fashioned ones work the best for me.

Then I think about a protein, lately I've been opting for raw peeled almonds. Almonds are the best nut for Pitta types and if they are sliced they have just enough crunch to be satisfying but small enough to get a little soft and warm too.

Then I like to add some color, I don't eat enough fruit int he winter because Wisconsin isn't really known for it's winter fruit. Dried fruit can be a little tricky with my Vata imbalance right now but the moisture I add to my oatmeal and heat rehydrate the fruit enough so it's not drying and it's a great way to add variety to a basic bland food.

Lastly the sweets. I like sugar, I like sweet oatmeal. However white sugar is bad for me, bad for really everyone but this is my lunch we're talking about here. I go for the raw sugar, it's just easier to toss into the tupperware than honey or maples syrup. Both of which I have used but my lunch gets thrown into my bag and there's not telling what kind of leaks could happen on my walk to work and believe me many leaks have happened.

All of that goes into a microwave safe bowl with about a cup and a half for water and it comes out delicious! And the best part is that it is so warm and filling that it holds me till dinner, a task many a sandwich has failed at.

Some other combos I've been trying and loving...

-A scoop of crunchy peanut butter and a dollop of honey.

-A little coconut milk and coconut flakes with cardomon and cinnamon.

-Almond butter, maple syrup and sugared dates

Ah, oatmeal; served warm to heat up Vata, sweet to help cool Pitta, also gooey and heavy to help ground both flighty Vata and lightweight Pitta.

if you don't use plastic all this fits into a half pint mason jar perfectly!

So what's your super food?
